IE7 vs. Web Standards

I know that not every user agent going to supported most of the current web standards including DOM level 2, but opera’s people promise that. As said by David Storey in his article at Web Standards Group http://webstandardsgroup.org/features/david-storey.cfm

I don’t think so IE would be coming up with all supported tags in IE7, then what will happen when more then half of the user’s all around the world using IE?

And sometime clients only want support of specific browser explicitly for web applications.

So when IE is going to start supports most of the standards for web? I am curious about it and I believe so to you people.
